How to Calculate Discounts — Formulas & Examples

Standard Discount Formula

The core formula to find the sale price: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

$80 item at 25% off → $80 × 0.75 = $60
Savings = Original − Sale Price → $80 − $60 = $20
Savings % = (Savings ÷ Original) × 100 → 25%

Stacked / Multiple Discounts

When two discounts apply in sequence, each one reduces the already-discounted price — they do not simply add up:

$100 at 20% off → $80, then 10% off → $80 × 0.90 = $72
Combined saving = $28 = 28%, not 30%
Formula: Final = Original × (1 − D1÷100) × (1 − D2÷100)

Reverse Discount Formulas

Two common reverse problems solved:

Discount with Sales Tax

Tax is applied after the discount in most jurisdictions: Total = Sale Price × (1 + Tax% ÷ 100)

Original Discount Sale Price +8% Tax
$100 10% $90.00 $97.20
$100 20% $80.00 $86.40
$100 25% $75.00 $81.00
$100 50% $50.00 $54.00

💡 Pro Tips for Discount Calculations

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the original price by (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Formula: Sale Price = Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Example: $80 at 25% off → $80 × 0.75 = $60. Savings = $80 − $60 = $20.

Divide the sale price by (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Formula: Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Example: Paid $60 after 25% off → $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

Each discount applies to the already-discounted price, not the original. Example: $100 at 20% off → $80, then 10% off → $80 × 0.90 = $72. Combined saving = 28%, not 30%. Use the Multiple mode for accurate results.

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, then multiply by 100. Formula: Discount% = ((Original − Sale) ÷ Original) × 100. Example: $80 → $60 → ((80−60)÷80)×100 = 25%.

In most jurisdictions, sales tax is applied to the discounted price (sale price), not the original price. Always calculate the discount first, then add tax. Use the Sales Tax option in the calculator for accurate totals.

Multiply the price by 0.8 (or divide by 10 and multiply by 8). Example: $100 × 0.8 = $80. Use the quick-preset buttons in the Standard mode for instant results.
